Stone Paintings
I have always loved nature and all things related. While painting wildlife, I realized I could combine my love of animals and birds with the beauty of natural stones.
I buy the stones cut and polished. Through trial and error I discovered if I build up in layers in the outline of the subject I could capture the detailed realistic look in my paintings that I am known for.
I start off by finding a stone with colors and patterns that will be natural background for whatever subject I am painting. For example, on a trip to Colorado I found a wonderful piece called "Utah Ice" an uncommon stone that looks like a large piece of sliced ice. It is perfect for all winter type scenes such as polar bears. In the shape of the animals I start outlining the subject in layers with gesso, lightly sanding between layers. Once I feel I have a good base, I start adding color, usually light to dark building up this time in layers of color to get the depth of color and detail that I want.
Once I am happy with what I have created, I finish the piece by spraying a clear varnish over the stone to protect the creation.
The paintings on stone are usually displayed on easels; some are free standing, depending on the size and cut of the stone.
Whatever you choose, I know you will be delighted with the uniqueness of these paintings. They can be displayed anywhere, home or office. They are wonderful one of a kind art pieces that you will treasure forever.
